Jeff Beck has had a long and storied career, stretching from being part of the Yardbirds in the 60s to his induction as a solo artist into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. He continues to produce new and exceptional material as well as tour, and he’s a certified creativity hero because he’s always charted his own course, so though I thoroughly enjoy Beck’s fellow Yardbirds alumni Eric Clapton & Jimmy Page, for sheer inventiveness and sonic soundscapes I’ll take Jeff any time.
It’s pretty hard to find uniqueness in this over-processed, homogenized and corporate-shaped world, but Beck is truly one-of-a-kind. In the same ways that Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlan and Steve Vai have pushed the boundaries of the electric guitar, Jeff Beck has never “settled,” never done shtick and never failed to astound and amaze his audiences. I was lucky enough to see him play in Milwaukee just a couple of weeks after his ‘09 Hall of Fame induction and it was a drop-dead killer show. You can get a great feel for the man, his music and one of his many top-notch bands with the DVD “Performing This Week…Live at Ronnie Scott’s.” Highly recommended!!!
